Why are my shoes getting mouldy in my wardrobe?

I’ve recently noticed a weird smell coming from some of my shoes, and it’s really disappointing since I’ve put a lot of effort into my collection. A couple of my favorite sneakers are starting to develop mould, and I’m starting to wonder if my storage methods are to blame. I keep them in a closed wardrobe, but with the warm weather here in Los Angeles, it feels like moisture might be the issue.

I’ve tried airing them out and even using silica gel packs, but I still see some mould creeping in. Is anyone else having this problem? What do you do to keep your shoes fresh? Are there specific materials or styles that are better for humid conditions? I’d love to hear your experiences and tips!

I had a similar issue last summer. I started using those shoe trees made of cedar, and they really helped absorb moisture and keep the shoes fresher. Also, I switched to storing them in breathable cotton bags instead of just plastic or closed boxes. That made a difference too!

I’ve had similar issues with mold in my closet, especially with certain materials like canvas. I switched to those shoe boxes with ventilation holes, and it really helped. Also, keeping a dehumidifier in the room made a big difference for me during those muggy months. Have you thought about that?
