How to Create a Cozy Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

With winter fully upon us here in Melbourne, I’ve been trying to put together a cozy capsule wardrobe that balances style and warmth. I love a retro vibe, so I’m looking for layering options that allow me to mix and match comfortably.

What fabrics do you all recommend for staying warm without bulk? I’ve found that some materials really keep the heat in, but I’m unsure which ones to focus on. Additionally, are there particular color palettes that help achieve that minimal yet chic winter look?

I’d love to hear what you’re including in your own winter capsule wardrobes. What are your must-have pieces that offer both comfort and style?

For layering, I’ve been loving merino wool and cashmere—they’re warm but super lightweight! I usually go for earth tones like deep greens and rusty oranges in winter; they feel cozy and inviting without being too dark. I can’t live without a good oversized cardigan and some chunky scarves to tie the whole look together!

I’ve had good luck with merino wool for layering since it’s warm but super lightweight. For colors, earth tones like olive and rust seem to vibe well with that retro feel. As for must-haves, a chunky knit sweater and a nice long coat are definitely in my rotation this winter!
